Our members include people working in TV, radio, theatre & film, entertainment venues and recreation grounds; working as journalists, actors, dancers, sportspeople, cartoonists, photographers, orchestral and freelance musicians, singers and opera performers as well as people working in public relations, advertising, book publishing and website production… in fact everyone who works in the industries that inform or entertain.

The new position of Chief Executive Officer leads the day-to-day operations of the union. The position is directly appointed by and accountable to the elected members of MEAA Board, and through them to the Federal Council, other committees and ultimately to the membership of MEAA.

Leading the most established union and industry advocate for Australia’s creative professionals, the Chief Executive Officer will have overall responsibility for advancing the interests of our members and ensuring the long term sustainability of MEAA.
The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for creating a culture of organisational excellence to enable MEAA to best represent its members through the development and the implementation of its long-term strategy.

To be effective in the role, the new CEO should have:

  • Significant experience at a senior executive level in managing and leading all aspects of the operations of a small/medium organisation, or of a key department/division in a large organisation.
  • Demonstrated expertise and success in creating and maintaining a working environment and internal culture that attracts, retains and motivates a diverse group of high quality employees.
  • High-level negotiation and influencing skills with a variety of internal and external stakeholders and other interested parties to achieve successful outcomes for the organisation in a politically sensitive and public environment.
  • Strong communication and representational skills including experience in traditional and newer forms of media and the ability to communicate the concerns of stakeholders to a variety of internal and external groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, develop and implement strategies, policies and processes to build a sustainable and effective organisation for all stakeholders.
  • Experience in, or a considerable understanding of, working with an elected representative board in a member-based organisation or association.
  • Experience in, or significant engagement with, the industrial relations landscape including an awareness of opportunities and challenges facing unions currently and in the future.
  • A commitment to the process and benefits of collectivism, and its place in a modern workplace and society.
    Knowledge of, and a passion for, the performance, media, entertainment and music industries, the people working in them and their integral place in our society.
